Even clouds and a light sprinkle did not dampen the mood for attendees Thursday night, September 25, 2014, at Bernie Schein’s book signing of his new novel, “Famous All Over Town.” Guests entered through the front gate which opened into a courtyard that whisked us back in time as we walked on brick and tabby surrounded by yellow battlements.  In the corner, a small group of musicians calling themselves Horizon Smooth Jazz performed.

As I scanned faces searching for people I knew, I saw friends from the University of South Carolina Beaufort and from the ProWriters group. Author Pat Conroy, friend of Bernie Schein and author of many books including The Great Santini, chatted with guests.   We introduced ourselves to Pat and he graciously agreed to let me take his picture with Mike.  Afterwards he introduced us to his personal trainer then drifted away as other people gathered to chat with him.

We made our way over to the refreshments, a beer for Mike and wine for me.   Under the arches volunteers set up tables containing nibbles like pita chips & hummus, tortilla chips & salsa, strawberries, and one table devoted to delicious cupcakes.  After enjoying our snacks, Mike stood in line while I continued to reminisce with friends. Not long after joining Mike in line, an unpleasant fellow tried to start a fight by bullying his way through the line. Words were exchanged and things became tense until the man’s friend spoke to him.  A few minutes later he left without incident.  I am so glad I am not writing to you about a brawl at the book signing!  🙂

Mina, introduced earlier as Pat Conroy’s personal trainer, chatted with us for a little while until Pat presented her with a signed copy of Bernie’s book. What a nice guy!

We bonded with those who remained; Jean, an elementary school teacher on vacation, talked about the joys and heartaches of teaching; Bernie and Mary, told us about their experiences at his duty station in Hawaii (we plan to get together again soon); and Alice told me about her love of tennis.

When I met Bernie Schein he revealed a delightful presence that invites conversation. He took time to speak with everyone as he signed books; he even posed for a picture with me.  Thank you Bernie for being so patient when our flash didn’t work right away!

With our book signed and picture taken, we ventured upstairs; volunteer Docent Carol Lauvray provided a quick tour and details about museum membership.

Please take time to visit the Beaufort History Museum when you have a chance.  Free admission is provided for Active duty military and their families, but consider leaving a donation to help fund the museum.

I am very happy Mike and I took advantage of this opportunity to connect with Bernie Schein, Pat Conroy, my friends from the University of South Carolina Beaufort, members of the ProWriters, and Beaufort neighbors who stood in line patiently waiting to meet and greet the author.
