PI006: Budget Cuts Hit Home: No Independence Day Celebration on Parris Island this Year

For the first time since I arrived in Beaufort, SC back in 1994, Parris Island will not host a 4th of July celebration.   While it’s sad to give up the day enjoying all the traditional Depot festivities including the Marine Band concert and awesome fireworks display, I certainly understand.  It would be hard to justify spending the money while our government employees are being furloughed.

The good news is the government sequestration has not cancelled Independence Day! The town of Port Royal will celebrate beginning at 7:30 PM with a Marine Band concert and continue with a fireworks display set to begin around 9:00 PM.  So if you are in the area you won’t need a gate pass to access Parris Island, just head on down to the Sands Beach in Port Royal, about a 10 minute drive from Parris Island, to hear some good music and watch the rocket’s red glare…
